Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has dismissed criticism of his defensive approach, insisting that he has no plans to change the football philosophy he has followed throughout his 47-year coaching career.

The Portuguese coach addressed the issue at a press conference in Accra on Monday, September 21, 2026, ahead of Ghana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia.

Queiroz was asked whether the criticism surrounding the style of football associated with his teams could lead him to adopt a different approach during his second spell in charge of the Black Stars.

The experienced coach responded by arguing that results, rather than style, ultimately determine whether a coach keeps his job.

“Have you seen any coach lose their job because of style of play before?” Queiroz asked.

“Coaches lose their job because they don’t win, not because of their style.”

The 73-year-old coach then pointed to the longevity of his career as evidence of the consistency of his approach.

“There is one thing that has kept me in my job for 47 years and it’s not after 47 years that I’m coming to change my style,” he said.

Queiroz has returned to the Black Stars at a crucial stage for Ghana, following the country’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

His immediate focus is now on securing qualification for the 2027 tournament, with Ghana set to face Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia in their upcoming qualifiers.

The coach’s comments make clear that he intends to rely on the principles that have shaped his career as he begins his latest assignment with the Black Stars.
