Spanish football has been struck by tragedy following the death of CD Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel, who suffered a cardiac arrest after collapsing during a match against FC Andorra.

The 30-year-old went down following a collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono, forcing officials to abandon the second-tier encounter seven minutes into stoppage time.

The incident occurred when Owono rushed out of his penalty area to clear a long ball but struck De Miguel in the chest with his knee.

Despite their efforts, De Miguel could not be revived and was taken to hospital for further treatment, where he later died.

“There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can alleviate this feeling of overwhelming sadness.”
