Ghana will host Somalia at the Essipong Sports Stadium in Sekondi during the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign, with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) securing temporary approval from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to use the facility.
GFA President Kurt Okraku confirmed the development, ruling out the Accra Sports Stadium as the venue for the upcoming fixture.
According to Okraku, the association has received the necessary clearance from CAF to stage the match at the Western Region facility.
“I can tell you on authority that the game will not be played at the Accra Sports Stadium. It will be played at the Essipong Stadium because we have had the green light from CAF,” he stated.
He explained that CAF had granted Ghana temporary permission to use both the Accra Sports Stadium and the Essipong Sports Stadium as preparations continue to make the facilities suitable for hosting international matches.
“I think we will be ready. The Confederation of African Football has given us temporary permission to use the Essipong Stadium. As we speak, we have two temporary approvals, the Accra Sports Stadium and the Essipong Sports Stadium,” Okraku added.
The approval gives Ghana an alternative venue for its home international fixtures while efforts continue to improve the country’s football infrastructure.
Ghana’s encounter with Somalia will therefore take place at Essipong instead of the Accra Sports Stadium, following CAF’s temporary clearance.
