Carlos Queiroz has stepped down as Black Stars head coach after just five matches in charge, ending his short stint with a 20 percent win rate.
The Portuguese coach confirmed his departure following Ghana’s exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, bringing an end to a four-month contract that was primarily focused on the tournament.
Queiroz was appointed by the Ghana Football Association in April on a short-term deal running until August. His contract included a performance-based extension clause that required Ghana to reach the World Cup quarter-finals. The Black Stars’ Round of 32 exit meant that target was not achieved.
During his time in charge, the 73-year-old recorded one win, two draws and two defeats.
His tenure began with a 1-1 draw against Wales in an international friendly before Ghana opened their World Cup campaign with a 1-0 victory over Panama. The Black Stars then played out a goalless draw with England before losing 2-1 to Croatia in their final Group L match.
Despite the defeat to Croatia, Ghana progressed to the knockout stage as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams. However, their campaign ended with a 1-0 loss to Colombia in the Round of 32, with Jhon Arias scoring the decisive goal.
Across his five matches, Ghana scored three goals and conceded four.
In his farewell message, Queiroz thanked the Ghana Football Association, the players, technical staff and supporters for their backing during his time with the national team.
He also said he was proud of the team’s efforts, adding that the Black Stars had restored respect and credibility on football’s biggest stage despite falling short of their quarter-final target.
Queiroz’s departure leaves the Ghana Football Association searching for a new head coach ahead of Ghana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign later this year.
