Belgium booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a commanding 4-1 victory over co-hosts the United States, ending the Americans’ hopes of a deep run in the tournament.
Charles De Ketelaere starred with two goals as Belgium outclassed Mauricio Pochettino’s side, while Hans Vanaken and substitute Romelu Lukaku also found the net.
The United States, who welcomed back striker Folarin Balogun after FIFA suspended his one-match ban, struggled to create clear-cut chances throughout the match despite home support in Seattle.
Belgium took the lead in the ninth minute when Nicolas Raskin’s cross was turned home by De Ketelaere.
The hosts drew level in the 31st minute after Malik Tillman’s free-kick deflected off Hans Vanaken and found the net.
Belgium restored their advantage just two minutes later as De Ketelaere headed in a cross from Leandro Trossard to make it 2-1 before half-time.
The visitors extended their lead early in the second half after De Ketelaere dispossessed goalkeeper Matt Freese, allowing Vanaken to slot the ball into an empty net from outside the penalty area.
Romelu Lukaku sealed the victory deep into stoppage time, finishing calmly from a tight angle to make it 4-1.
Balogun, who returned after FIFA temporarily suspended his automatic one-match ban following an appeal, was largely kept quiet by Belgium’s defence. His best opportunity came late in the match, but goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois produced a fine save.
The defeat means the United States become the third and final co-host nation to exit the tournament after Canada and Mexico were also eliminated.
Belgium will now face Spain in the quarter-finals as they continue their bid for a first FIFA World Cup title.
