Cristiano Ronaldo’s hopes of winning the FIFA World Cup ended in heartbreak after Spain secured a dramatic 1-0 victory over Portugal in the Round of 16 to book their place in the quarter-finals.
Substitute Mikel Merino scored the decisive goal in stoppage time in Dallas, sending the reigning European champions into the last eight and bringing an end to Ronaldo’s sixth and final World Cup campaign.
The match was a closely contested affair, with both sides struggling to create clear-cut opportunities during a cagey first half.
Portugal’s best chance before the break fell to Ronaldo after João Félix’s header found him inside the box, but his effort was comfortably saved by Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón.
Spain controlled possession for much of the second half but found it difficult to break down Portugal’s disciplined defence.
Portugal introduced Rafael Leão and Diogo Dalot after the hour mark in an attempt to inject fresh energy into the attack, but Spain eventually found the breakthrough.
In the 90+1st minute, Merino timed his run perfectly between Portugal’s central defenders before calmly slotting the ball into the bottom corner to hand Spain a late winner.
Portugal pushed for an equaliser during six minutes of added time but failed to find a way back into the contest.
The final whistle sparked emotional scenes as Ronaldo broke down in tears before acknowledging the Portuguese supporters, ending his long pursuit of the only major trophy missing from his career.
Spain, meanwhile, advanced to the quarter-finals and continued their impressive defensive record, keeping a fourth consecutive clean sheet at the tournament.
