President John Dramani Mahama has jokingly suggested that Black Stars players who cannot sing Ghana’s national anthem should not be allowed to represent the country.
Speaking at the Jubilee House while reflecting on Ghana’s performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the President said he noticed that many Black Stars players remained silent during the national anthem before matches.
He contrasted their approach with that of players from other countries, who sang their national anthems with pride before kick-off.
“During the World Cup, our players did not sing the national anthem. All the other players sang their national anthem with pride. Ours were quiet,” he said, drawing laughter from those present.
Mahama then playfully suggested that singing the national anthem should become a requirement for national team selection.
“It should be a qualification for playing for the national team. If you cannot sing the anthem, you cannot be in the team,” he joked.
His remarks sparked laughter and added a light-hearted moment to his reflections on Ghana’s World Cup campaign.
