President John Dramani Mahama has set a March 2027 target for the completion and commissioning of the first 700 housing units at the long-stalled Saglemi Housing Project.
The President toured the project on Thursday, August 20, 2026, to assess its current condition and review efforts to bring the abandoned development back to life.
The Saglemi project was launched in 2012 under the administration of the late President John Evans Atta Mills, with plans to construct 5,000 affordable housing units to address Ghana’s housing shortage.
Mahama said, however, that the project was stalled after a change in government, as legal issues and investigations surrounding the development delayed its completion.
“This was a vision that was started by Professor Atta Mills and I came to continue it. Unfortunately, when government changed hands, there were some legal issues and the new government said they wanted to investigate,” he said.
According to the President, the prolonged suspension also left the development vulnerable to theft and damage, with key fittings and equipment removed from several of the unfinished buildings.
“The project stalled, but the looters came in and stole everything: the cables, wash basins, fittings and electricals, and it was left with an empty shell,” he said.
The government has since entered into a private-sector partnership aimed at completing the housing project.
Mahama said the developer had committed to completing 700 units by March 2027, which would then be ready for commissioning.
He added that the target is to increase the number of completed units to 1,500 by the end of December 2027.
“The developer said that 700 units by March 2027 will be able to be commissioned, and a total of 1,500 by December 2027,” he said.
The revival of the Saglemi project forms part of broader government efforts to restart stalled housing developments and expand access to affordable homes as Ghana continues to face a significant housing deficit.
