Aspiring National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu, has warned that the party could face a much tougher challenge in the 2032 general elections if it fails to recapture power in 2028.
Speaking in an interview on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, Boadu stressed that winning the 2028 election should be the NPP’s immediate priority.
According to him, the political circumstances surrounding the 2032 election could become more difficult for the NPP if the party spends another four years in opposition after 2028.
He explained that a victory for the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 2028 could allow the party to enter the 2032 election with a new presidential candidate who would be seeking to secure a second term.
Boadu believes that scenario would give the NDC a significant advantage and make it harder for the NPP to return to government.
“It is a must for us to win the 2028 elections because if we don’t win, the NDC would get a new presidential candidate, which will make it very difficult for us to win the 2032 elections because they would have a sitting president,” he said.
The former NPP General Secretary said his experience within the party makes him confident that he can help lead the NPP back to power.
His comments come as the NPP prepares for its internal contest ahead of the 2028 general election, with several senior figures positioning themselves for key leadership positions.
Boadu has indicated that his bid for the national chairmanship is partly driven by his belief that the party needs experienced leadership capable of rebuilding its structures and preparing it for the next national election.
For him, however, the larger objective remains restoring the NPP to government in 2028.
He therefore believes the party cannot afford to treat the upcoming election as an ordinary political contest, arguing that a failure to win could have consequences extending beyond 2028.
