Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has expressed confidence that Ghanaian voters, particularly the youth, will give the New Patriotic Party (NPP) another opportunity in the 2028 general elections, although he later clarified that his comments were intended as an appeal to protect democracy.
In a video shared on X, the Effutu MP was addressing an audience at an event when he made the remark, which appeared to provoke a strong reaction from those present.
“The things that I have seen, I believe that the youth of the country will give us a chance in 2028,” he said.
The audience’s response appeared to interrupt his address, prompting Afenyo-Markin to explain what he meant by asking the youth to give them another chance.
He said his comment was not simply a call for support for the NPP but an appeal for Ghanaians to give the country’s democratic system and political actors an opportunity in the next election.
“When I say you’ll give us a chance, I’m referring to democracy. Listen, I believe that the people of Ghana will give us a chance in 2028,” he explained.
He went on to urge the public to keep faith in the democratic process as the country prepares for the next general elections.
“Give the political actors a chance. I’m referring to our democracy. Give democracy a chance in 2028,” he added.
The clarification came after his initial statement was met with an apparent uproar from the audience, with the video capturing the interruption during his remarks.
Afenyo-Markin’s comments come as political parties begin looking ahead to the 2028 elections, when they will seek to win the support of voters across the country, including younger Ghanaians.
His explanation places the emphasis on democratic participation, although his initial reference to “giving us a chance” prompted a reaction from the audience.
