Students of St. Fidelis Senior High and Technical School at Tease in the Kwahu Afram Plains South District of the Eastern Region are reportedly resorting to open defecation because of the poor condition of the school’s toilet facility.
The school’s headmaster, Alexander Dzinaku, has appealed to the government, non-governmental organisations and philanthropists to urgently intervene, warning that the sanitation challenges are affecting the well-being of students and require immediate attention.
According to the headmaster, the state of the toilet facility has made it difficult for students to access decent sanitation on campus, raising concerns about hygiene and the overall school environment.
Dzinaku said the toilet problem is part of wider infrastructure challenges facing the institution, which also lacks a perimeter wall.
Without the wall, the school compound remains exposed to the intrusion of wild animals and other unwanted visitors, making it difficult to provide a safe and secure environment for teaching and learning.
He is therefore calling on government agencies, civil society organisations and benevolent individuals to support the school with the facilities needed to address these challenges.
The headmaster also appealed to teachers who have advanced into prominent positions in politics and other fields to remember the profession and communities that helped shape their careers.
He urged such individuals to contribute to improving education across the country, particularly by supporting schools in deprived communities that continue to struggle with inadequate infrastructure.
The situation at St. Fidelis SHS highlights the challenges some schools face in providing students with basic sanitation and a safe learning environment. The headmaster hopes that urgent support will help improve conditions at the school and ensure students can learn in a healthier and more secure setting.
