FIFA is facing criticism after overturning the red card shown to United States striker Florian Balogun during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Balogun, the United States’ top scorer at the tournament with three goals, was sent off in the Round of 32 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina after being adjudged to have made a reckless challenge.
Following an appeal, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee reviewed the incident and ruled that the striker should not have been dismissed. His suspension was subsequently rescinded.
The decision means Balogun will be available for the United States’ Round of 16 clash against Belgium as the host nation continues its World Cup campaign.
The ruling has sparked widespread debate among football fans, pundits and former players, many of whom have questioned the consistency of FIFA’s disciplinary process.
Critics argue that other players sent off during the tournament have been required to serve suspensions, raising concerns about unequal treatment.
The controversy intensified after reports emerged claiming that US President Donald Trump and White House officials had engaged FIFA President Gianni Infantino regarding the matter.
Those reports have fuelled further criticism online, with some supporters accusing FIFA of undermining the integrity of the competition.
Several coaches have also reportedly expressed concern, arguing that the reversal appears inconsistent with the application of the tournament’s disciplinary rules.
Neither FIFA nor the White House had publicly commented on the allegations at the time of filing this report.
