demolished NDC office in Ellembelle

A newly constructed National Democratic Congress (NDC) office complex in the Ellembelle District has been partially destroyed after a group of unidentified armed men reportedly stormed the site and carried out a demolition exercise.

The incident occurred on May 7, 2026, at Awiaso Junction, where the party was putting up a facility estimated to cost GH¢1 million.

According to reports, the attackers were armed with guns and machetes and targeted the building amid a prolonged dispute over ownership of the land on which the structure is being developed.

The District Chief Executive for Ellembelle, Joseph Armah Agyekum, who also chairs the District Security Council (DISEC), condemned the action and described it as unlawful.

He stressed that neither individuals nor groups have the authority to pull down structures, insisting that such decisions can only be sanctioned by the courts or DISEC.

The land at the centre of the dispute was reportedly purchased in 2017 by Ellembelle Member of Parliament Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah from the late chief Nana Boadi.

However, following the chief’s death, members of the Awiaso royal family challenged the legitimacy of the sale, leading to a legal dispute.

Although the matter initially went before the courts, it was later referred to Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in an attempt to settle the disagreement outside formal litigation.

According to the DCE, the NDC had accepted conditions proposed by the royal family, including making a fresh payment for the land, offering jobs to local youth and supporting the construction of a palace.

He claimed, however, that the family later requested that the MP and the NDC assist in facilitating the gazetting of King Kaku Aka III as Overlord of Nzema land, a demand he said was beyond the authority of the party and the legislator.

Meanwhile, Ellembelle NDC Constituency Chairman Alex Mahama warned that those behind the destruction would face legal action if apprehended.

He also noted that this was not the first time the project site had come under attack.
