The Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Elikplim Akurugu, struggled to hold back emotion as she made a public appeal for urgent repairs to the badly damaged road leading to the Ga East Municipal Hospital.
The NDC lawmaker made the appeal during a visit to the hospital to mark Mother’s Day with patients and mothers receiving treatment at the facility.
Visibly distressed by the condition of the road, Akurugu said the deteriorating stretch had become a major risk to pregnant women, emergency patients, health workers and ambulance services accessing the hospital.
In a dramatic moment during the visit, the MP went on her knees as she pleaded with the Minister for Roads and Highways and the contractor overseeing the project to intervene immediately.
“We beg you. It can be anybody. It can be me in an emergency. It can be my sister here. Please, we beg you in the name of God,” she said.
According to the MP, the road has become so dangerous that some critically ill patients struggle to make it to the hospital safely.
“When there is an emergency, before some patients get to the hospital, they are almost dead. The road is just deplorable. Please come to our aid,” she lamented.
Akurugu insisted that her concerns were driven purely by the welfare of residents and not politics.
“This is not political. It is about humanity. You never know who may need emergency care on this road one day,” she added.
The lawmaker disclosed that she had already engaged Roads Minister Kwame Governs Agbodza and the contractor, Oswald Construction, over the matter, but said the road continues to remain in poor condition.
Describing the extent of the damage, she remarked: “It’s no longer a pothole; it’s now a manhole.”
