Asiedu Nketiah on Okatakyie Afrifa’s arrest

National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has questioned how media personality and New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary aspirant Okatakyie Afrifa allegedly became too weak to walk after his arrest during disturbances at the Afigya Sekyere East constituency elections.

Speaking in an interview on Okay FM on August 5, 2026, Asiedu Nketiah said videos taken before Afrifa’s arrest showed him looking healthy and physically fit, making his appearance in court the following day puzzling.

According to him, Afrifa’s sudden use of a neck brace and apparent inability to walk raised questions about what may have happened while he was in police custody.

“Recently, I saw Okatakyie Afrifa when he was arrested. We all saw it on television. When he was being escorted into the vehicle, he looked fit and healthy.

“The next day, when he was supposed to appear in court, all of a sudden he was wearing a neck brace and could not walk. How did he suddenly become sick?

“Does it mean the police assaulted him in the cells? If it had happened during the arrest, we would have seen it,” he said.

Afrifa is currently on bail after his arrest following the violence that disrupted the NPP’s Afigya Sekyere East constituency executive elections.

According to his campaign team, the election proceeded despite a directive from the NPP National Steering Committee and an interim injunction issued by the High Court in Kumasi restraining the party from continuing parts of the electoral process.

The team said the party’s Acting National Chairman had directed on July 6, 2026, that the constituency elections be suspended pending the outcome of an ongoing court case.

Afrifa reportedly visited the election venue after receiving information that the suspended process was still taking place, intending to verify the situation and notify officials about both the court injunction and the party’s directive.

His campaign team, however, alleged that he and some of his supporters were assaulted by police officers before being arrested.

The team also claimed that Afrifa and four others sustained gunshot injuries during the incident and are currently receiving medical treatment.
