Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a remarkable career with Portugal that spanned more than two decades.

The 41-year-old confirmed his decision in a social media post on Thursday, November 5, saying he was ready to make way for the next generation of players.

“Today, the time has come to pass it on to the future. It was not an easy decision,” Ronaldo stated.

The Al-Nassr forward also indicated that he would hand back Portugal’s famous number 7 shirt after the November international break, signalling the end of an era for the national team.

Ronaldo leaves international football as Portugal’s all-time leading scorer, with 146 goals in 234 appearances. He also holds the records for the most appearances and goals in men’s international football.

His journey with Portugal began in August 2003, and over the years, he developed into the team’s captain and one of the most influential figures in the country’s football history.

One of the defining moments of his international career came in 2016, when he helped Portugal win their first UEFA European Championship title. He also played a key role in the country’s two UEFA Nations League triumphs.

His retirement brings to a close an extraordinary chapter in Portuguese football, with his goals, leadership and achievements making him a central figure in the history of the national team.
