Reports indicate that Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz will not be on the touchline when Ghana face Mexico in an international friendly on Friday, May 22, 2026.

According to 3Sports, one of Queiroz’s assistant coaches is expected to take charge of the team for the match temporarily.

The assistant coach will reportedly oversee training sessions and lead the Black Stars from the dugout during the friendly.

The game forms part of Ghana’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and is expected to offer several new and fringe players an opportunity to impress.

Since the match falls outside the FIFA international window, Ghana named an experimental squad made up of locally based players, U23 talents and several uncapped players.

One of Queiroz’s assistants, Ofei, recently described the fixture as “more than just a game,” stressing that it offers players the chance to prove themselves ahead of the World Cup.

Another assistant coach also admitted that Ghana faces a difficult challenge against Mexico, describing the hosts as a team with “great intensity and international experience.”

Mexico, who are co-hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup, are also expected to use the match as part of their preparations for the tournament.
