Moroccan football has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of 20-year-old player Faten Amar El Aziz, who reportedly drowned while attempting to cross into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the young footballer lost her life on August 2, 2026, after being caught in rough seas during a severe storm while trying to make the dangerous journey across the border.
Her death comes amid a surge in migration-related tragedies, with reports indicating that around 84 migrants have drowned in recent days while attempting to reach Spain from North Africa.
Faten Amar’s club, Maghreb Atlétic Tétouan, paid an emotional tribute to the promising player, describing her death as a heartbreaking loss.
In a statement, the club said she undertook the perilous journey not in search of fame or adventure, but in pursuit of a better future.
“With broken hearts, we mourn a dream that was shattered before it even began. She was not seeking fame or adventure but a better life and a future across the border,” the club said.
The Moroccan Union of Professional Footballers also expressed its condolences, with President Mustapha El Hadaoui and members of the federation extending their sympathies to her family, teammates and the wider Moroccan football community.
The union praised Faten Amar’s dedication to the sport, noting that she proudly represented Maghreb Atlétic Tétouan and previously featured for Moghreb Tétouan, where she left a lasting impression despite her young age.
Her tragic death has reignited conversations about the dangers faced by migrants attempting to cross from North Africa into Europe in search of safety and better economic opportunities.
