Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Bryan Acheampong, has rejected claims that New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia orchestrated attacks against Kennedy Agyapong during the party’s internal contest.
In a statement issued on June 19, 2026, Acheampong acknowledged that some individuals associated with various campaigns, including his own, made comments that did not reflect the values and traditions of the NPP.
“During and after the contest, a few voices around the flagbearer’s and even my own campaign directed disrespect and sometimes insults at Hon Agyapong that were unworthy of our tradition,” he said.
However, he maintained that there is no basis for holding Dr Bawumia responsible for the actions of those individuals.
“There is no evidence that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia commissioned, directed, or endorsed those attacks,” Acheampong stated.
According to him, the individuals involved acted independently and were driven by personal grievances against Kennedy Agyapong rather than instructions from the party’s flagbearer.
“The individuals responsible carry their own long-standing grievances with Hon Agyapong, quarrels that are personal to them and that they have pursued on their own account,” he added.
Acheampong cautioned party supporters against judging either Bawumia or the NPP based on the conduct of a few individuals, warning that doing so could deepen divisions within the party.
He expressed confidence that the party can move beyond its internal disagreements and unite behind Dr Bawumia as it prepares for the 2028 general election.
According to him, rebuilding unity within the NPP remains crucial if the party is to position itself effectively for a return to power.
