The United States military says it has carried out new strikes on targets in southern Iran, including missile sites and boats allegedly trying to place mines.

US Central Command said the operation was conducted in “self-defense” to protect American troops from threats posed by Iranian forces.

According to a spokesperson, the US military is continuing to defend its personnel while showing restraint during the ongoing ceasefire period.

Iran has not yet officially responded to the latest attacks, and it remains unclear how the strikes could affect ongoing peace talks between the two countries.

The development comes as Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmail Baqai said some progress had been made in negotiations with the United States, although no final agreement had been reached.

“It is correct to say that we have reached a conclusion on a large portion of the issues under discussion,” Baqai said. However, he stressed that a peace agreement was “not imminent.”

US President Donald Trump recently suggested that both sides were close to a deal but later stated that he had instructed negotiators not to rush the process.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also hinted that an agreement could be reached soon.

The conflict began on February 28 when the US and Israel launched large-scale strikes on Iran. Iran later responded by attacking Israel and US-allied countries in the Gulf region.

Iran also moved to restrict activity in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping route, causing oil prices to rise sharply worldwide.
