Passengers travelling through Kotoka International Airport will no longer be required to remove their shoes and belts during security screening starting from August 2026.
President John Dramani Mahama announced the change on Monday during the launch of Ghana’s electronic visa (E-visa) system at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City in Accra.
According to the President, new screening equipment is being installed at the airport to improve security checks while making the process easier and faster for travellers.
“We are receiving and installing new equipment that will spare travellers using our airports the inconvenience of having to remove their shoes and their belts,” he said.
The new technology forms part of government efforts to modernise airport operations and position Ghana as a major aviation and travel hub in West Africa.
Officials believe the upgraded system will reduce delays at security checkpoints, shorten queues and improve overall passenger experience at Kotoka International Airport.
The changes are also expected to improve operational efficiency for airlines using the airport, which remains one of the busiest in the subregion.
The announcement comes alongside the introduction of Ghana’s new E-visa platform, which is aimed at simplifying travel procedures for foreign visitors and boosting tourism, investment and business travel.
The government is expected to provide more details later on whether similar screening systems will be introduced at other airports across the country.
