The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has stepped up its grassroots mobilisation in the Effutu Constituency as it begins preparations to challenge incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin in the 2028 general elections.
National Youth Working Committee Chairman Okai Mintah made the party’s intention clear during a mobilisation exercise in Winneba on August 26, 2026, declaring that the Effutu parliamentary seat would be a major target for the NDC.
Addressing branch youth organisers and grassroots activists, Mintah said strengthening the party’s structures at the branch and polling-station levels would be critical to securing an electoral breakthrough.
“Afenyo-Markin out, NDC MP in,” he declared, drawing a strong response from party supporters.
Mintah criticised Afenyo-Markin’s record in Parliament, arguing that his position as Minority Leader had not translated into meaningful development for the people of Effutu.
He also accused the MP of focusing on political attacks and what he described as propaganda against the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) and its Chief Executive Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, instead of addressing the needs of his constituents.
According to Mintah, the NDC’s strategy will not be limited to election-season campaigning. He said the party intends to build a permanent grassroots mobilisation structure that remains active throughout the political cycle.
“We will not leave our victory to chance. We will organise at the branch level, build the capacity of our young people, and work relentlessly until every vote that belongs to the NDC is mobilised,” he said.
He identified the youth as a key part of the party’s plans to strengthen its parliamentary representation in 2028 and urged branch youth organisers to remain active within their communities.
Mintah said the NDC would focus on identifying local concerns, communicating its policies and achievements, expanding its volunteer network and giving young people greater responsibility in the mobilisation process.
Effutu, whose capital is Winneba, has long been a competitive constituency in the Central Region. Afenyo-Markin has represented the area in Parliament for several terms and built a strong political presence in the constituency.
Mintah, however, said the NDC would not be intimidated by the NPP’s influence in the area.
He urged party members to focus on sustained grassroots engagement and ensure that their structures at the branch and polling-station levels are fully prepared well before the 2028 elections.
“The work starts now. We are not waiting for 2028 before we organise. By the time the election comes, the structures must already be ready, the people must already be engaged, and the message of the NDC must already be firmly established in every community,” he said.
The Winneba mobilisation forms part of Mintah’s wider engagement with NDC youth organisers and grassroots activists across the country.
He said the party’s ambition to expand its parliamentary majority would require a deliberate campaign in both traditional strongholds and competitive constituencies, with Effutu among the seats the NDC intends to target in 2028.
