Former Methodist Bishop of the Obuasi Diocese, Bishop Stephen R. Bosomtwe Ayensu, has said he would prioritise the construction of the National Cathedral over the proposed Accra-Kumasi Expressway, arguing that putting God first should guide the country’s development choices.

Speaking in an interview on Neat FM on October 13, 2026, the clergyman said that if he had to choose between the two projects, he would favour the cathedral because he believes greater reliance on God could help address some of the challenges facing the country, including road accidents.

“On a scale of preference, my life is in the hands of God, so I will choose the National Cathedral over the expressway. We can build the expressway, but there will still be accidents. What do we gain from that? But if we put God in charge of such things, accidents will reduce,” he said.

Bishop Bosomtwe Ayensu maintained that God should be placed at the centre of national life, insisting that physical development alone would not resolve every challenge confronting Ghana.

He argued that prioritising faith could make life easier and help the country deal with difficulties, describing God as the ultimate authority over events on earth.

To further illustrate his position, the former bishop said he would also choose the Bible over money if faced with a similar decision.

“If I had to choose between the Bible and money, I would pick the Bible over money. Even though I am not saying money is not important, it is a matter of putting first things first,” he added.

His comments place spiritual priorities at the centre of the debate over the National Cathedral and the proposed expressway, two projects associated with different national needs. While the cathedral is intended as a religious landmark, the expressway proposal focuses on road infrastructure between Accra and Kumasi.

Bishop Bosomtwe Ayensu’s position reflects his conviction that faith should take precedence in national decision-making, including choices about major development projects.
