President John Dramani Mahama is expected to travel to Sunyani in October 2026 to officially launch construction of a new 40,000-capacity sports stadium in the Bono Region.
The National Sports Authority (NSA) says preparations are underway for the groundbreaking ceremony, which is expected to mark the beginning of work on the major sports infrastructure project.
According to Senior Kwame Kusi, Bono Regional Public Relations Officer of the NSA, President Mahama is expected in Sunyani in early October to perform the ceremony.
Speaking to the media in Sunyani, Kusi said the government had secured 35 acres of land at Old Abesim in the Sunyani Municipality for the project.
He explained that the planned facility would be built to international standards and accommodate a wide range of sporting disciplines.
“The project is a FIFA-standard facility that will contain all sporting disciplines,” Kusi stated.
The stadium is expected to have a seating capacity of 40,000, making it one of the major sports infrastructure projects planned for the region.
Kusi said construction is expected to be completed by 2029.
As part of the broader sports development plans for Sunyani, the Sunyani Coronation Park will also be reshaped and maintained.
The new stadium project is expected to expand the region’s capacity to host major sporting events and provide improved facilities for athletes and sports enthusiasts.
The planned groundbreaking ceremony in October will therefore mark the formal start of the project, with work expected to continue towards the 2029 completion target.
