The Bono Regional Police Command has arrested a 36-year-old man, Gyamfi Christian, over his alleged involvement in a fake gold syndicate operating in the Berekum Municipality.
Christian was arrested on August 17, 2026, following intelligence-led operations conducted by the police in connection with a complaint filed by 29-year-old gold aggregator Christopher Awuni.
According to the Police, Awuni reported that a four-member group posing as legitimate gold dealers defrauded him of GH¢1.1 million in July 2026.
The suspects allegedly sold him 110 troy ounces of what was presented as gold, which was later found to be fake. The material has since been kept by the Police as an exhibit.
Investigators eventually traced Christian to a hideout in Wamfie in the Dormaa East District, where he was apprehended.
During interrogation, the suspect allegedly admitted his involvement in the transaction and told investigators that the deal took place at Drobo in the Jaman South Municipality.
Christian also named three alleged accomplices who remain at large. They have been identified as Isaac Antwi, Balthazar and Abraham, alias Frenchman, who is believed by investigators to be the leader of the group.
Preliminary investigations have further linked the same syndicate to an earlier alleged fraud case in Drobo, where another individual was reportedly defrauded of GH¢1.4 million.
The suspect remains in police custody and is assisting investigators as efforts continue to locate and arrest the three fleeing accomplices.
In a statement signed by Bono Regional Police Command Public Relations Officer Chief Inspector Thomas Akeelah, the Police urged the public to exercise extreme caution when engaging in gold transactions.
The public was also encouraged to report suspicious activities to the Police and other law enforcement agencies to help prevent similar fraudulent schemes.
