Dr Cosmos Asante, also known as Yaw Ampong, has reportedly been picked up by the Ghana Police Service

A lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr Cosmos Asante, popularly known as Yaw Ampong, has reportedly been arrested by the Ghana Police Service over allegations that he presented himself as a traditional ruler in Juaben.

Reports circulating on social media indicate that Dr Asante was picked up on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, on the KNUST campus.

He is alleged to have paraded himself as the Adumasahene and Mawerehene of Juaben, an act that could constitute an offence under Section 63 of the Chieftaincy Act, 2008 (Act 759).

According to the reports, some members of the community recognise Dr Asante as a chief. However, questions have reportedly been raised about whether the customary rites and procedures required to formalise his installation have been completed.

The allegations centre on whether he had the customary authority to occupy the chieftaincy positions he is said to have claimed.

Dr Asante is reportedly being held in police custody as investigations into the matter are expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the case.

As of the time of reporting, the Ghana Police Service had not issued an official statement confirming the arrest or detailing the allegations against him.

The claims remain unconfirmed by an official police account, and further details are expected to emerge as the matter develops.
