Continuing students of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) could return to the classroom next week, as the Ghana Education Service (GES) moves to reopen the school nearly three months after violent disturbances forced their temporary closure.
In a statement issued on Thursday, October 22, 2026, the GES said preparations were far advanced to allow the affected students to resume academic activities.
The school was closed to continuing students on August 5 following unrest during which some students allegedly attacked the headmaster, Abdulai Zakaria, and vandalised school property.
The violence reportedly erupted after allegations emerged over the discovery of what appeared to be the remains of a baby buried on the school compound. Some students accused the headmaster of having knowledge of the incident, triggering a confrontation that escalated into violence.
However, the committee that investigated the August disturbances did not establish the allegations against the headmaster through direct evidence.
The incident left the headmaster injured and resulted in damage to school property and personal belongings. Six students were also arrested in connection with the violence, according to reports at the time.
The decision to close the school to continuing students was intended to help restore calm, protect students and staff, and allow investigations into the incident to proceed.
While continuing students have remained away from school, first-year students reported for the new academic year on September 18.
The GES said management was working to ensure that continuing students could return next week, although the reopening preparations are still ongoing.
The Service added that further information would be communicated when necessary.
The statement was signed by Daniel Fenyi, Head of Public Relations at the Ghana Education Service.
