Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has called on the Attorney General and Minister for Justice to appear before Parliament to explain the circumstances surrounding the arrest and detention of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Director Dennis Miracles Aboagye.
Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, the Effutu MP urged the Speaker to summon the Attorney General to brief the House on the actions of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), warning that the handling of the case could have implications for Ghana’s democracy.
“Mr Speaker, what is happening to Miracles Aboagye is not good for our democracy. The Attorney General should come to this House and brief the House on the situation,” he said.
Afenyo-Markin stressed that the Minority was not opposed to investigations or accountability but objected to what he described as the “Rambo-style” manner in which the arrest was carried out.
“We are not against accountability. We are against the Rambo style,” he stated.
The Minority Leader also cautioned lawmakers from both the Majority and Minority against viewing the issue through a partisan lens, warning that similar actions could one day affect anyone in public office.
“Our colleagues should not be up in arms. It can be you tomorrow. Let’s be careful, my dear political colleagues. Let’s be careful, Ghanaian political leaders. It can be somebody today. There is an election ahead. You can never tell. Don’t let us encourage some of these excesses. And when we talk about it, don’t look at it with a partisan lens. It can be you,” he said.
Afenyo-Markin further criticised the GH¢50 million bail conditions imposed on Aboagye, describing them as excessive and insensitive, particularly considering the personal challenges he had recently faced.
“He has a wife and children. Already, the man was affected by the floods. He lost everything. He’s already traumatised. Then, to worsen it, you detain him for three days and you say if he wants his freedom, he should bring properties worth GH¢50 million. How do you do this?” he questioned.
Miracles Aboagye was later released from EOCO custody after meeting his bail conditions.
Videos circulating on social media showed the NPP communicator leaving the EOCO headquarters to cheers from supporters who had gathered outside the premises following his release.
