A young man identified as Douglas Acheampong has allegedly been shot and killed by personnel of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) during an anti-illegal mining operation at Akyem Hemang in the Fanteakwa South District of the Eastern Region.
The incident reportedly occurred at about 7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, after a team of military personnel conducting an anti-galamsey operation passed through the community.
According to a report by citinewsroom.com, the confrontation began when the officers reportedly spotted Kwaku Kwebia, an immigration officer, standing in the community while speaking on his mobile phone in civilian clothing.
The personnel, travelling in four V8 Land Cruisers and a pickup vehicle, allegedly accused Kwebia of acting as an informant and demanded his phone to determine who he was speaking with.
Kwebia reportedly denied the accusation, explaining that he was speaking to his brother, but refused to surrender his phone.
The disagreement allegedly escalated when the personnel attempted to force him into one of their vehicles.
His sister reportedly intervened and blocked the vehicle in an effort to prevent her brother from being taken away, attracting the attention of other residents.
Douglas Acheampong was among residents who gathered at the scene and reportedly confronted the personnel as the situation became increasingly tense.
As more people allegedly gathered, the officers reportedly fired several warning shots in an attempt to disperse the crowd.
Sources cited in the report claim that Acheampong and other residents began running away after the shots were fired.
It was during the retreat that Acheampong was allegedly shot from behind at close range.
The bullet reportedly entered through his back and exited through his stomach, leaving him critically injured.
Residents reportedly rushed him to a hospital after the NAIMOS personnel had left the area, but medical staff pronounced him dead on arrival.
The alleged shooting has reportedly generated anger among residents, with community members said to be considering demonstrations to demand justice for Acheampong and accountability over the circumstances surrounding his death.
The allegations have not been independently verified, and the exact circumstances leading to the shooting remain unclear. Further investigations will be required to establish what happened and determine responsibility.
