An alleged shooting incident involving illegal chainsaw operators has left one person seriously injured at the Abesewa Forest in the Ahafo Ano South East District of the Ashanti Region.
The incident, which occurred today at Abesewa, involved workers of Next Door Farms, a company that had reportedly obtained a concession from the Forestry Commission to plant trees in the forest as part of a reforestation initiative.
According to an eyewitness who spoke to the media after the company planted the trees, some illegal chainsaw operators allegedly entered the forest and began cutting down the newly planted trees.
The eyewitness said officials and workers of Next Door Farms went into the forest to stop the illegal activities, but upon reaching the area, the suspected illegal operators allegedly opened fire on them.
One worker of Next Door Farms was hit and sustained serious injuries. He is currently receiving treatment at the Tepa Government Hospital.
Meanwhile, two individuals believed to be part of the group of illegal operators have reportedly been arrested and are being held at the Tepa Divisional Police Station as investigations continue.
Authorities are expected to investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators to justice.
