Ghanaian businessman Ibrahim Mahama has pledged an additional financial reward to the Black Stars ahead of their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup clash against Croatia on Saturday, June 27.
Mahama, founder of Engineers and Planners, made the promise during a visit to the team’s camp, where he praised the players and technical staff for their impressive performances in the tournament so far.
Addressing the squad, he revealed that he had initially withheld a previous financial pledge because he wanted to see improved performances before committing fully.
“I was holding money back even when I pledged, and I told the minister that I won’t give you the money until I see a good performance, but now I want to rush home and give him all the money,” he said.
Mahama also reflected on his long association with Ghana football, recalling the Black Stars’ heartbreaking exit from the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
“In 2010, the president and I went to South Africa to watch the match, and we were robbed. From then on, I just said to myself that I’ll follow football again,” he said, adding that his family’s renewed interest, particularly that of his son, rekindled his passion for the national team.
He also commended head coach Carlos Queiroz for the impact he has made since taking charge of the Black Stars.
“I am very proud because you came in within a short time and you’ve been able to put the boys together with your wonderful performance,” he said.
Mahama further motivated the players by promising them a special reward in addition to the bonuses from the government.
“Apart from the government’s bonus, I have a special bonus for you. I have a much better bonus than the taxpayers’,” he told the team.
He urged the Black Stars to maintain their strong performances and make Ghana proud as they seek qualification to the knockout stage of the World Cup.
