A football match in southern Thailand ended in tragedy after a 24-year-old player was killed and 12 others injured when lightning struck the pitch during a local tournament.
The victim, Sofwan Awae, sustained critical injuries after the lightning strike hit Santiphap Stadium in Sungai Golok on Tuesday, August 4, 2026.
According to police, emergency responders rushed to the scene and made frantic efforts to save the young footballer, but he later succumbed to his injuries.
Police chief Thun Sirikhunt, quoted by Bernama, confirmed Awae’s death and said 12 other players, including a Malaysian, were injured and transported to hospital for treatment.
Dramatic videos shared on social media captured the terrifying moment a bolt of lightning struck the playing field, triggering a loud explosion that sent players running for safety.
Awae’s teammates immediately rushed to his aid, turning him onto his back and attempting to resuscitate him before medical personnel arrived.
The match formed part of the Golok FA Cup, an amateur football competition featuring teams from Thailand and Malaysia. Awae’s club, SAMCOLTS, was playing against Abu x Nong Sirin when the incident occurred.
The talented winger had only recently secured a move to Thai third-tier side Yala FC before the tragic incident.
Following his death, Yala FC paid tribute to their new player, expressing sympathy to his family.
“We extend our condolences to the family of our new FC Yala player, Sofwan Awae,” the club said.
The incident has sparked renewed discussions about player safety and the need to suspend sporting activities during severe weather conditions.
