The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has issued an urgent safety advisory to the public, warning of the deadly risks posed by heavy rains, flooding and electricity during the ongoing rainy season.
In a notice titled “Rainstorm and Electricity – A Dangerous Combination,“ the power distributor cautioned that fallen power lines, flooded streets and damaged electrical equipment could lead to serious injuries or loss of life if proper precautions are not observed.
The warning follows recent heavy rains and flooding triggered by the spillage of the Weija Dam, which submerged several power distribution substations and caused outages in communities including Ashbread, White Cross, Kinshasha and Tetegu.
ECG stressed that residents should never assume fallen power lines are safe, as they may still be carrying electricity and pose a deadly threat.
The company also advised households to unplug electrical appliances during thunderstorms to prevent damage and reduce the risk of electric shocks.
As part of its advisory, ECG outlined five key safety measures for the public:
- Stay away from fallen power lines and never assume they are safe.
- Unplug electrical appliances during thunderstorms.
- Avoid walking through flooded areas near electrical installations.
- Treat every fallen power line as live and dangerous.
- Report electrical hazards immediately by calling ECG on 0302611611.
ECG urged the public to remain vigilant and prioritize safety throughout the rainy season, stressing that a single mistake around electricity during floods or storms can have fatal consequences.
