The brother of jailed TikToker Camila Alhassan has appealed to the government to show compassion and secure her release after she was sentenced to one year in prison.
Speaking to the media in a video after Thursday’s court proceedings, the man, who did not disclose his name, said the sentence had devastated the family.
While admitting that his sister had acted wrongly, he pleaded with the authorities to forgive her and consider the impact her imprisonment would have on those who depend on her.
He said Alhassan is the mother of a toddler and the family’s main source of support, arguing that both her child and relatives would suffer greatly during her incarceration.
“The sentencing has really affected the family. I am an NDC youth organizer in Awutu and so I’m appealing to the government to forgive my sister. If she has committed wrongdoing, she is only human and so they should have mercy on her and forgive her actions.
“She has a toddler so they should temper justice with mercy. The child needs the mother to take care of her since my sister is the one who supports the family,” he said.
Camila Alhassan was sentenced by the Accra Circuit Court on July 16, 2026, after pleading guilty to charges of offensive conduct and publishing false news.
The conviction followed her admission that she shared videos falsely alleging, without evidence, that President John Dramani Mahama buried 32 cows as part of rituals to secure victory in the 2024 general election.
Following the ruling, her lawyer, Kwadwo Gyamfi Bonsu, said the court dismissed the charge of electronic abuse after determining that it lacked jurisdiction to hear that offence.
He explained that Alhassan was, however, convicted on the charges of offensive conduct and publishing false news and handed a one-year prison sentence.
According to the lawyer, the defence urged the court to impose a lighter sentence, but the judge held that the increasing number of similar offences required a punishment that would serve as a deterrent.
