The United Party (UP) has declared that its founder, Alan Kyerematen, will contest the 2028 presidential election on the party’s ticket, dismissing speculation that he could abandon the political movement ahead of the polls.

The party’s Director of Communications, Solomon Owusu, said Kyerematen remained committed to the UP and was expected to lead its campaign in the next general elections, provided he remained alive and healthy enough to do so.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile, Owusu maintained that the party was preparing for the 2028 elections with Kyerematen as its presidential candidate.

“In 2028, if God grants Alan life, he will contest on the ticket of the United Party,” he stated.

He also rejected suggestions that the UP was merely a temporary political arrangement, insisting that the party was focused on building a lasting organisation capable of challenging the two dominant political parties, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

According to Owusu, the party’s approach has been to concentrate on establishing its structures rather than seeking constant public attention.

“We are building a very robust, a very solid political party that will stand the test of time. That is why we don’t make that much noise. We are working underground, putting all the structures in place to defeat the two political parties,” he said.

Owusu further defended the party’s prospects, dismissing doubts about whether the movement could establish itself as a serious political force.

He pointed to the UP’s butterfly symbol and its formation on September 25, 2023, as part of his argument that the party had a future beyond the current political cycle.

“That butterfly remains a butterfly, and it will continue to be a butterfly, and it will blossom and transform this country,” he added.

His comments signal the UP’s intention to position Kyerematen at the centre of its 2028 presidential campaign as it works to build a political organisation capable of competing with the NPP and NDC.
