Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei has cautioned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) against any attempt to remove Alexander Afenyo-Markin as Minority Leader in Parliament, warning that such a move could provoke strong public reaction.
Appiagyei said the Effutu MP had demonstrated the wisdom, courage and intelligence needed to lead the Minority Caucus, arguing that his leadership had helped shape the group’s performance and strengthened the party’s appeal.
In a report by Assaeradio.com, she said she was unaware of any move to replace Afenyo-Markin but stressed that she would oppose an attempt to remove him.
“I haven’t heard nor seen it. But any attempt to remove Afenyo-Markin will incur the wrath of Ghanaians. Because he is a man of wisdom, courage and has intelligence to steer the affairs of the caucus and this is shaping us and by extension made the NPP attractive,” she said.
The Deputy Minority Leader also described Afenyo-Markin as a courageous and honest politician whose intelligence had contributed to his performance in Parliament.
“He came in as a courageous and certain honesty and he is very intelligent and that is why he has succeeded in parliament. What I want to tell you is that he is loved by Ghanaians, especially the NPP,” she added.
Beyond his leadership in Parliament, Appiagyei praised Afenyo-Markin for using his personal resources to organise training for members of the Minority Caucus.
According to her, the initiative had helped equip members with the skills needed to perform their parliamentary duties more effectively.
“He has been able to use his own resources to train us, so, we can deliver in the House and this is not the first time, it has occurred severally… And that is the man I am talking about,” she stated.
Her comments come amid discussion about Afenyo-Markin’s position as Minority Leader, although she said she had neither heard nor seen any move to remove him.
Appiagyei’s remarks amount to a strong public defence of his leadership, with the Deputy Minority Leader emphasising his contribution to the caucus and warning against any attempt to replace him.
