A 32-year-old unemployed man has appeared before an Accra Circuit Court after allegedly defrauding a businessman of GH¢1.86 million by falsely claiming he could facilitate a GH¢3 million bank loan.
The accused, Alexander Adusei Gyan, is alleged to have posed as an employee of a reputable bank and convinced the complainant to part with the money under the pretext of processing the loan facility.
According to the prosecution, the complainant, a businessman residing in Ofankor in the Ga North Municipality, met Gyan in October 2024, when the accused claimed he could secure the loan if periodic contributions of GH¢2,000 to GH¢10,000 were made over one year.
Believing the representation, the complainant reportedly transferred a total of GH¢1,860,000 to a mobile money account registered in Gyan’s name, receiving payment acknowledgements after each transaction.
The prosecution told the court that after collecting the money, Gyan instructed the complainant to open an account at the bank’s Achimota branch but subsequently cut off all communication and allegedly went into hiding.
The matter was later reported to the police, leading to Gyan’s arrest.
During investigations, the accused allegedly admitted the offence in his caution statement and identified one Desmond Osei as an accomplice. However, he failed to assist investigators in locating the said accomplice.
Gyan has been charged with defrauding by false pretences but pleaded not guilty before the court.
He was initially granted bail in the sum of GH¢2 million with three sureties, including one to be justified with landed property and two public servants earning at least GH¢5,000 a month.
Following an application by his lawyer for a review of the bail conditions, the court reduced the bail to GH¢500,000 with two sureties, one to be justified with landed property and the other to be a public servant earning not less than GH¢4,000 monthly.
The court also directed the sureties to deposit copies of their Ghana Cards at the court registry before the bail conditions can be satisfied.
