A church service in Kumawu in the Ashanti Region was thrown into chaos after police officers reportedly entered the premises while pursuing a suspected cannabis dealer who had allegedly sought refuge inside the church.
According to a report by Dunkwa TV, the suspect ran into the church in an attempt to evade arrest, with an informant and police officers following him into the building during the service.
The incident reportedly triggered a confrontation between worshippers and the officers, who were accused of disrupting the service while attempting to apprehend the suspect.
Videos circulating on social media captured several church members challenging the officers’ conduct and questioning whether their actions were lawful.
“You are enforcing the law but you don’t know the law. In the laws of Ghana, which law allows a police officer to forcefully arrest someone in a church by holding the person and pressing the person’s neck?” one congregant asked.
Some members alleged that the officers used excessive force during the attempted arrest despite pleas for restraint.
“When he came, we told him to take his time but he said no. Instead, he would rather press his neck and kill him. Come and see what they were doing in the church,” another church member claimed.
Others expressed concern about the possible consequences if the suspect sustained serious injuries during the incident.
“The same police officers, if something happens to this guy, will tell us that the church has killed him,” another congregant alleged.
Church members also criticised the officers for interrupting the worship service.
“You police officers came while we were praising God and by force you wanted to arrest the person and disrupt church activities. Do you think we should allow you to do that?” another worshipper questioned.
The circumstances surrounding the attempted arrest and the allegations made by the congregants have not yet been officially addressed by the Ghana Police Service.
