Ranking Member of Parliament’s Economy and Development Committee, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has called on Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson to explain the reported $1.2 billion decline in Ghana’s international reserves when he presents the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review on Thursday, July 23, 2026.
Speaking during a debate on a parliamentary report covering monetary policy, macroeconomic developments and the performance of the banking sector on Wednesday, Mr Oppong Nkrumah said Ghanaians deserve clarity on the factors that led to the reduction in the country’s external reserves.
He, however, praised the Bank of Ghana for halting the financing of GoldBod’s operations, describing the decision as a positive move towards improving monetary discipline.
Meanwhile, the First Deputy Minority Whip and Member of Parliament for Tolon, Habib Iddrisu, has urged the Finance Minister not to request additional funding in the upcoming budget review.
According to him, the government has failed to deliver on key campaign promises, including the implementation of the 24-hour economy, establishment of the Women’s Development Bank and job creation initiatives, despite funds already being allocated to support those programmes.
The Minority’s concerns come ahead of the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review, where Dr Ato Forson is expected to outline the government’s economic performance, fiscal position and outlook for the remainder of the year.
