New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has led a delegation of senior party officials to visit the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison in the Eastern Region.
The delegation included former NPP National Chairman Freddie Blay, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Mampong MP Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong and several other leading members of the party.
The visit comes just days after Wontumi was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment with hard labour following his conviction on illegal mining-related offences.
Security was heightened at the prison as the NPP delegation arrived to meet the incarcerated regional chairman.
Although Wontumi appeared composed during the visit, he was visibly under strain.
The NPP leadership has continued to rally behind him and has confirmed that his legal team will challenge the conviction through the appeals process.
