Cape Coast building collapse

Two people have been confirmed dead after a building collapsed in Cape Coast following a heavy downpour that hit parts of the Central Regional capital in the early hours of Sunday, June 21, 2026.

The deceased have been identified as 12-year-old Anastasia Abakah and 40-year-old Adwoa Baduwa, according to hospital authorities.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said the incident occurred at Gyagyaano, behind Yogurt Fie on Idan Fourth Alley, where a single-room structure collapsed, trapping four occupants beneath the debris.

Personnel from the Cape Coast Metropolitan Fire Station and the Central Regional Fire Service Headquarters responded swiftly to distress calls and launched a rescue operation at the scene.

Rescuers successfully pulled all four victims from the rubble and handed them over to the National Ambulance Service for transportation to the Ewim Polyclinic for emergency treatment.

Despite efforts by medical personnel, Anastasia Abakah and Adwoa Baduwa were later pronounced dead.

The two other victims survived the incident and are currently receiving treatment. Their identities have not yet been disclosed.

Preliminary investigations by the Central Regional Command of the GNFS suggest that prolonged heavy rainfall may have weakened the structure, leading to its collapse.

The Fire Service has urged residents living in old mud houses and buildings showing signs of structural defects to seek professional assessments and evacuate unsafe structures, particularly during the rainy season.

Authorities say investigations into the incident are ongoing.
