Member of Parliament for Hohoe, Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo, has shared heartwarming stories of how Ghana’s opening victory at the 2026 FIFA World Cup brought people together and strengthened relationships within his constituency.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on June 18, 2026, the lawmaker recounted how a divorced couple rekindled their relationship after meeting at a viewing centre to watch Ghana’s Group L opener against Panama.

According to him, the man and his former wife, who had been separated for four years, coincidentally found themselves at the same venue to watch the Black Stars in action.

The MP said emotions ran high after Ghana scored a dramatic winning goal in the 95th minute, prompting the man to embrace his ex-wife in celebration.

“Another incident happened at one of the viewing centres. A man who had divorced his wife four years ago hugged her at the viewing centre. And this morning, Mr Speaker, we were told that the woman was found sleeping with her former husband. This is what yesterday’s match has done to our country,” he told Parliament.

Worlanyo Tsekpo also revealed that the Black Stars’ victory helped bridge divisions between residents of Alavanyo and Nkonya, two Volta Region communities that have experienced a long-standing conflict.

He explained that families from both communities set aside their differences and gathered at a viewing centre to support Ghana during the match.

“Because of the long-standing problem between Alavanyo and Nkonya, families from the two communities had not seen each other for years. But yesterday, around 11 o’clock, we saw families moving from Nkonya to Alavanyo to watch the match,” he said.

The MP’s remarks came during a parliamentary session in which lawmakers congratulated the Black Stars on their hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening game of the tournament.

Parliament also urged the team to improve its performances and remain focused as the competition progresses.

The call was made by the Member of Parliament for Berekum West, Dickson Kyere-Duah, who commended the Black Stars for securing all three points while cautioning against complacency ahead of tougher fixtures in the tournament.

Ghana’s victory has sparked excitement across the country, with many supporters celebrating not only the result but also the sense of unity and togetherness it inspired among communities and families.
