Residents of Jei River, a suburb of Kasoa Ofaakor in the Awutu Senya East Municipality, say an abandoned Agenda 111 hospital project has become a source of fear and insecurity in the community.
According to residents, construction work on the hospital stopped shortly after the 2024 general elections, leaving the uncompleted structure deserted and exposed to squatters and suspected criminals.
A report by adomonline.com indicated that the project began in 2023 after delays caused by unresolved land disputes. The hospital is currently estimated to be about 41 per cent complete.
Residents say the abandoned structure has now turned into a hideout for criminals and a breeding ground for dangerous animals.
They claim robbery attacks in the area have increased in recent months, with some senior high school students reportedly becoming victims.
Community members also expressed concern because the abandoned project is located close to the Municipal Assembly.
Beyond the security concerns, residents say the delay in completing the hospital has worsened healthcare challenges in Kasoa and nearby communities.
According to the 2021 Population and Housing Census, Kasoa has a population of more than 236,000 people but currently depends on only one polyclinic and a mother-and-child hospital.
As a result, many residents are forced to travel to places such as Winneba and Weija-Gbawe to seek medical care.
Residents are now appealing to President John Dramani Mahama and the Ministry of Health to intervene and ensure the contractor returns to complete the hospital project.
