England international Conor Gallagher came off the bench to score as Atletico Madrid secured a comfortable 3–1 victory over Union Saint-Gilloise in the Champions League.
The former Chelsea midfielder started on the bench for Diego Simeone’s side but made an immediate impact just ten minutes after his second-half introduction, latching onto a loose ball inside the box and firing past Kjell Scherpen to make it 2–0.
Earlier, Julian Alvarez, formerly of Manchester City, had opened the scoring in the 39th minute with his second goal of the campaign, putting Atletico in control before the break.
Union briefly threatened a comeback when ex-Accrington Stanley defender Ross Sykes headed past Jan Oblak with ten minutes remaining to make it 2–1.
However, substitute Marcos Llorente sealed the win deep into stoppage time, netting his third goal of the competition to restore Atletico’s two-goal cushion.
The result gives Atletico their second win in four group-stage matches, moving them up to 14th in the overall standings, while Union Saint-Gilloise remain 26th.
