The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has confirmed that 18 people have died following a series of environmental disasters, including floods, mudslides, landslides and building collapses, across 13 districts in the Central Region.

The disasters have affected more than 5,000 residents and displaced 377 people after 58 buildings were destroyed.

Central Regional Director of NADMO, Kwesi Dawood, said the organisation is currently carrying out a comprehensive assessment in the affected communities to determine the level of support needed for victims.

According to him, the scale of the destruction has stretched NADMO’s resources, with emergency relief supplies significantly depleted after several flood-related incidents since May.

As a result, the organisation is appealing to corporate bodies, non-governmental organisations, religious groups and individuals to donate relief items to support affected residents.

Dawood disclosed that NADMO is collaborating with the Hydrological Authority, National Security, Environmental Health Departments and the Ghana Health Service to fumigate affected areas and prevent outbreaks of waterborne diseases.

He explained that the intervention became necessary after floodwaters submerged several cemeteries, raising concerns about possible public health risks.

The NADMO director also commended the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana National Fire Service for their swift response and rescue efforts during the disasters.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation as efforts intensify to provide relief and prevent further loss of life and property in the affected communities.
