The first batch of 300 Ghanaians who voluntarily returned from South Africa following xenophobic attacks arrived at Kotoka International Airport on Wednesday, May 27, 2026.

The returnees were welcomed by a government delegation led by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah and received support packages aimed at helping them reintegrate into society.

One of the returnees told the media that each person received GH¢5,000 from the government.

He added that they were also given transportation support to help them travel to their various hometowns.

According to him, each returnee also received a “Ghana Must Go” bag containing several items, including food supplies and clothing.

“I thank the president and his cabinet. God bless them all,” the returnee said.

Ahead of their arrival, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced that the support package for the evacuees would include financial assistance, transportation support, reintegration allowances and free psychosocial services.

He also stated that the returnees would be added to a special government database for job and startup opportunities as part of efforts to support their resettlement in Ghana.
