Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz has questioned the effectiveness of VAR after the Black Stars‘ goalless draw against England in their 2026 FIFA World Cup Group L clash on Tuesday.
The Portuguese tactician expressed frustration over what he believes was a clear penalty not awarded to Ghana during the tense encounter.
Speaking after the match, Queiroz suggested that the Video Assistant Referee system failed to intervene despite what he described as an obvious infringement inside the penalty area.
“Is VAR still working at the World Cup? I have my doubts about that because another penalty was not given to Ghana, a clear penalty against England,” he said.
The Black Stars delivered a disciplined defensive performance to secure a valuable point against one of the tournament favourites.
Ghana largely kept England’s attacking players under control while creating a few opportunities of their own on the counterattack.
The result follows Ghana’s dramatic opening victory over Panama and leaves the Black Stars in a strong position heading into their final Group L fixture.
Despite his disappointment with the officiating, Queiroz praised his players for their resilience and organisation against a highly-rated England side.
The draw leaves Group L finely poised, with qualification to the knockout stage set to be decided in the final round of matches.
