On April 13, 2026, Pope Leo XIV responded to a scathing social media attack from President Donald Trump, declaring that he has “no fear” of the administration and will continue to “speak out loudly” against war.

The exchange marks a significant escalation in tensions between the Vatican and the White House, primarily over the ongoing U.S.-Israel war on Iran. The feud intensified following President Trump’s post on April 7, 2026, that a “whole civilization will die tonight” if Iran did not meet certain demands.

Pope Leo called the threat “truly unacceptable” and warned against the “delusion of omnipotence” driving global conflicts. The Pope also criticized the administration’s use of Christian rhetoric to justify the war, stating that “Jesus is the King of Peace” and does not listen to the prayers of those who wage war.

On the evening of April 12, President Trump launched a direct broadside against the pontiff on Truth Social saying “Weak and Terrible” calling the Pope “WEAK on Crime” and “terrible for Foreign Policy,” suggesting the Pope should “get his act together” and stop “catering to the Radical Left”. Mr. Trump again posted an AI-generated image of himself as a Christ-like figure, which many Catholic leaders and observers condemned as “gross blasphemy”.

Speaking to reporters aboard the papal plane en route to Algeria, the Pope, the first U.S.-born pontiff remained firm in his stance stating, “I have no fear of the Trump administration, or speaking out loudly of the message of the Gospel”. He emphasized that his appeals for peace are rooted in the Gospel, not politics, adding, “Too many innocent people are being killed. And I think someone has to stand up and say there’s a better way”.

The Pope clarified he has no intention of entering a direct debate with Trump, stating, “I am not a politician”.
