A police officer has been remanded by the Adabraka District Court over the alleged death of a 20-year-old law student following a police pursuit on the Tema Motorway.
Robert K. Koranteng, a General Corporal stationed at the Traffic Management Enforcement Unit at the Police Headquarters in Accra, has been charged with murder.
The prosecution alleges that Koranteng caused the death of Ivan Apprey Baidoo, a Level 200 Law student of Central University, during the incident on August 27, 2026.
Koranteng’s plea was not taken when he appeared before the court. He has been remanded and is expected to reappear on September 29, 2026.
According to the prosecution, Baidoo had booked a Yango motorbike ride operated by Samuel Wesley Arthur from Ashongman Estates to the East Legon Astroturf Park, where he intended to play football.
The prosecution said Arthur allegedly went through a red traffic light at the University of Professional Studies Accra intersection, where Koranteng was on duty.
Koranteng reportedly pursued the motorbike and signalled the rider to stop, but Arthur continued towards Okponglo, the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange and subsequently the Tema Motorway.
The pursuit allegedly continued to a section of the motorway beyond the former tollbooth, where the prosecution said Koranteng kicked the motorbike.
The impact allegedly caused Arthur to lose control of the motorcycle, resulting in a crash into a concrete barrier.
The prosecution further alleged that Koranteng left the scene without stopping to assist the victims or arranging immediate medical attention.
Members of the public later transported Baidoo and Arthur to the Tema General Hospital. Baidoo was pronounced dead on arrival, while Arthur received treatment and was discharged.
The Airport Divisional Motor Traffic and Transport Department was informed of the accident at about 4:30pm on the same day and subsequently took over the initial investigation.
On September 3, Dr Eric Dumfeh, a pathologist at the Tema General Hospital, conducted a post-mortem examination on Baidoo.
The prosecution said the examination established the cause of death as haemorrhagic shock, bilateral haemothorax and haemoperitoneum resulting from blunt trauma to the chest and abdomen.
The Homicide Unit later took over the investigation on September 8.
Koranteng was arrested on September 12, with the prosecution subsequently presenting the case before the Adabraka District Court.
He remains in custody pending his next appearance on September 29, 2026, as investigations into the circumstances surrounding Baidoo’s death continue.
