Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover, a former Greater Accra Regional Minister and aspiring National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has blamed the conduct of some former government appointees for contributing to the party’s defeat in the 2024 general election.
Titus-Glover said some Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) appointed under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo acted in ways that alienated people and ultimately hurt the party at the polls.
He cited the former Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO) CEO, Kingsley Aboagye Gyedu, as an example, claiming that he personally helped secure the appointment but was later disappointed by decisions taken at the state-owned company.
Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM, excerpts of which have circulated on social media, Titus-Glover alleged that more than 100 people he had helped get jobs at VALCO were dismissed shortly after he left the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council.
He said Aboagye Gyedu was not initially aware that he was being considered for the position and that he personally took steps to recommend him to Akufo-Addo.
According to Titus-Glover, he first informed Aboagye Gyedu that he had discussed the position with the former president and asked him to submit his CV.
He said the recommendation was subsequently discussed at a Cabinet meeting at Peduase, where Akufo-Addo agreed to appoint Aboagye Gyedu as VALCO CEO.
Titus-Glover said his own appointment as Greater Accra Regional Minister later gave him the opportunity to help several people secure employment.
“I had to speak with the President to give him that position. When I left the President’s office, I called him and told him that the President was making me the Greater Accra Minister, so the next morning he should bring me his CV because I had lobbied for the position of VALCO CEO for him,” he said.
He added that he was therefore surprised when he later learned that the people he had helped employ had been dismissed.
“Do you know that less than 24 hours after I left for the Regional Coordinating Council, Aboagye Gyedu sacked all of them? He sacked all of them, including my driver,” Titus-Glover claimed.
He argued that such actions by some appointees created resentment within the party and contributed to the NPP’s poor electoral performance in 2024.
“Some of the CEOs that President Akufo-Addo gave work to made us lose the election,” he said.
Titus-Glover also suggested that the consequences of such decisions could still be seen at VALCO, where he claimed that members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) were subsequently employing staff.
His comments form part of his wider criticism of the conduct of some officials who served under the previous NPP administration, as the party continues to assess the factors that contributed to its 2024 defeat.
